FINAL VERSION OF MILITARY CONSTRUCTION BILL APPROVED
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House of Representatives today approved the final version of the military construction appropriations bill, allocating a total of $278,393,000 for work at defense bases in Washington State in this fiscal year, U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks said.
Only minor changes were made to recommendations made earlier this year by the House appropriations panel that includes Rep. Dicks. He said that "This year's bill provides a substantial boost in force protection for our bases, related to increased threats to defense department installations in the U.S. and worldwide."
"In addition," he noted, "new initiatives in this bill will support the Army's 'transformation' effort at Fort Lewis and the Navy's effort to improve housing at Naval Station Bremerton and improve the efficiency of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard."
Among the expenditures at Washington military installations approved today were:
- $16,410,000 for a small arms training center at Sub Base Bangor
- $7,500,000 for the construction of a 40,000 sq.ft. “Undersea Warfare Systems Dependability Center ” at NUWC Division Keyport. Originally planned for the 2004 budget, the construction supports the growing mission at Keyport for testing and validating the next generation of undersea warfare vehicles.
- $2,200,000 for a ship movements office and control tower at Naval Station Bremerton, related to safety and security.
- $3 million was also added to the $21.7 million budget request for anti-terrorism and force protection improvements at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. The additional money will allow for the acquisition of 1.8 acres of land in downtown Bremerton for the construction of a 6-story parking structure to accommodate approximately 1,000 vehicles. It allows the shipyard to complete its security plan, creating a buffer around existing buildings and moving parking outside of the security fence.
- The Subcommittee also approved the addition of $856,000 for planning and design of a new Information Operations Armory at Camp Murray. It will be a secure and compartmentalized facility to connect with information operations field support teams deployed worldwide.
