FINAL VERSION OF MILITARY CONSTRUCTION BILL
FUNDS PIER, SKILLS CENTER IN BREMERTON

WASHINGTON, D.C. – {House and Senate negotiators approved a final version of the Military Construction Appropriations bill today, endorsing the earlier agreement to fund the second phase of the new carrier pier as well as the construction of the new Industrial Skills Center in Bremerton, U.S. Congressman Norm Dicks said.

The legislation contains all spending for construction and facility improvements at military bases in the U.S. and overseas during the current fiscal year, including $251 million in Washington State, Rep. Dicks said.  The conference agreement reached today will be ratified later this week by the House and Senate, he added.

Included will be $24 million for the second stage of construction to replace the carrier pier at Naval Station Bremerton, and another $14 million for a Puget Sound Naval Shipyard renovation project that consolidates training programs and relocates an emergency communications center.  The plan also calls for the removal of an outmoded structure, which will allow for the expansion of Bremerton's downtown ferry terminal.

The bill also represents a major boost for the Army's "transformation" concept, pioneered by Fort Lewis in Tacoma.  It provides a total of $136 million for construction activity associated with two brigades that are being reconfigured at Fort Lewis to address emerging threats worldwide, said Rep. Dicks.
