REP. NORM DICKS ANNOUNCES ACADEMY APPOINTMENTS FOR 2001
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks today announced the nomination of several area students to vacancies at United States service academies for the upcoming academic year.
Rep. Dicks, who serves as a senior member of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, is a strong proponent of military academy education which, he says, “represents the lifeblood of future military leadership.” Cadets from the 6th Congressional District have been drawn to the academies in part because of the substantial defense presence in Washington State, the congressman said. Each year there is serious competition for these placements, he noted, and the interest this year among high school seniors has been intense.
“I am pleased by this interest because it is important during peaceful times as well as during conflict to replenish our nation's cadre of military leaders,” the congressman said.
This year's nominees include high school students from Port Angeles, Lakewood, Tacoma, Bremerton, Port Orchard, Brinnon, Fircrest, Ocean Shores, Gig Harbor, Chimacum, Seabeck and Lakebay.
The nominees for the classes entering the academies in the summer of 2001 are as follows (note that some students are nominated for more than one academy, and that hometown of record is listed):
