Building 460 Contract Awarded

Following a suggestion by U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks and Bremerton Mayor Cary Bozeman, the Navy has agreed to paint and refurbish the historic Building 460 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

Rep. Dicks has learned this week that the Navy has approved a contract with Cherokee General Corporation of Portland, OR, for the complete renovation of the exterior of the building, including painting and sealing the structure and repair of damaged windows, doors and gutters.  It is a firm fixed price contract, valued at $2.039 million, with completion of the work scheduled for late October 2009.

Building 460¸ which houses the shipyard’s weld and shipfitter shops, was built in 1940 and as part of the shipyard historic district it maintains its WWII appearance.  Rep. Dicks said that the condition of the prominent Navy building at Bremerton’s waterfront had deteriorated in recent years in contrast, notably, with the comprehensive re-development of the city’s “front door.”

“The Mayor and I were particularly concerned about the building’s appearance because of its location nearby the new Washington State Ferry terminal, the city’s Waterfront Park, the Puget Sound Navy Museum, and the new Conference Center – all part of a renewal effort that has substantially brightened downtown Bremerton,” Rep. Dicks said.

“I am impressed by the Navy’s responsible stewardship in awarding this contract,” the congressman added.
