HOUSE PANEL APPROVES $127.6 MILLION
FOR CONSTRUCTION AT WASH. MILITARY BASES

WASHINGTON, D.C. – {A House of Representatives appropriations panel has approved $9.2 billion in funding for military construction at U.S. defense bases worldwide, including $127.6 million at installations in Washington State, U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks said.

            The funding represents the addition of about $25 million for projects that were not in the initial budget request submitted by the Bush Administration in February, said Rep. Dicks, who serves as a member of the military construction appropriations subcommittee that approved the bill today.

            The work that will be accomplished at Washington State bases during the next fiscal year includes a major upgrade of a submarine pier at Submarine Base Bangor, barracks construction at Fort Lewis, construction of a Mission Support Center and installation of additional bulk fuel storage tanks at McChord Air Force Base and rehabilitation of a ship repair pier at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, the congressman said.

            The total amounts requested for military construction activities in Washington State for Fiscal Year 2004, which begins Oct. 1, 2003, are as follows:
