$102.6 MILLION IN MILITARY CONSTRUCTION
SLATED FOR WASHINGTON STATE NEXT YEAR

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Defense Department's budget for the next fiscal year contains a total of $102.6 million in military construction expenditures in Washington State, U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks said Monday.

Among the work planned next year at Washington's military bases will be a major upgrade of a submarine pier at Submarine Base Bangor, barracks construction at Fort Lewis and the installation of additional bulk fuel storage tanks at McChord Air Force Base, the congressman said.

The Bush Administration's budget request for military construction work in next year's Pentagon budget is more than $1 billion below the amount funded in the current year, noted Rep. Dicks, who serves as a member of the military construction appropriations subcommittee in the House.  The final version of the military construction bill passed by Congress for the current year contained a total of $278.4 million for Washington State, he said, after additions were made to the amounts requested in the President's budget.

The total amounts requested for military construction activities in Washington State for Fiscal Year 2004, which begins Oct. 1, 2003, are as follows:
