FEDERAL GRANT WILL AID EXPANSION
OF WESTPORT SENIOR CENTER

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A federal grant of $125,000 will be awarded to the Westport South Beach Senior Center, allowing for a significant expansion of the popular facility, U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks announced today.

The congressman said that he inserted the funds as an amendment to the appropriations bill that funds the Department of Housing and Urban Development, through a program entitled "Economic Development Initiatives."  Rep. Dicks said he has visited the Center and has been "impressed by the enormous contributions that the facility makes to improving the health and well-being of are senior citizens."

"Not only is this a great resource for seniors to receive adequate nutrition and counseling themselves, but it also keeps them actively involved in our community, helping kids through the tutoring program and sponsoring outreach programs for needy individuals in the area," Rep. Dicks noted.

The congressman added that "I know how much is accomplished in the limited space that the Center occupies, and I am delighted that we were able to make a federal contribution to this needed expansion."

The funding was added to a multi-agency appropriations bill cleared by Congress last week.  It has now been signed into law by the President Bush.
