FEDERAL INFRASTRUCTURE GRANT WILL ASSIST
CONSTRUCTION OF BREMERTON BREAKWATER

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Port of Bremerton will receive a federal grant of $955,000 to help construct a new 1,200 foot breakwater that is critical to the further development of the city’s waterfront marina, U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks said Tuesday.

The funding comes from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service through its Boating Infrastructure Grant program said the congressman, who serves as the senior Democrat on the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee.  It represents a substantial contribution toward the $7.3 million breakwater, which has been designed by the Port to provide more sheltered moorage for transient boats visiting the local marina.  Included in the breakwater construction plan will be provisions for utility connections to boats as well as for realigning the destroyer USS Turner Joy to reduce wave action.

“This is a terrific opportunity to increase boating access to the downtown Bremerton waterfront and to encourage further redevelopment in the area,” said Rep. Dicks.   “The grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has helped make this project a reality, and I am delighted that the Port of Bremerton proposal was one of only nine recipients selected from among 60 requests for funding,” he added.

The proposals were reviewed by a panel of Fish and Wildlife Service staff and members of the Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council, a federally-chartered group of business and association leaders that advises the U.S. Department of the Interior.
