House Bill Will Fund North Jetty Reconstruction Work
WASHINGTON, D.C. – An appropriations bill passed this week by the U.S. House of Representatives provides $3 million to initiate funding for reconstruction work of the north jetty at Ocean Shores, U.S. Reps. Norm Dicks and Brian Baird said.
The funding was contained in the Energy & Water Development Appropriations bill for the next fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1, the congressmen said. The bill also contained $100,000 for a study of potential long-term or permanent solutions to the erosion problems at Ocean Shores, they said.
The lawmakers noted that the insertion of $3 million into the House bill was critical because it matches a Senate-approved appropriation, assuring that the money will be included in the final version of the legislation. "By gaining approval for the same funding level that the Senate approved, this provision will not be in dispute during the compilation of the measure in a House-Senate conference committee in September," said Rep. Dicks, a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
Rep. Baird, a member of the House Transportation Committee which authorizes major water and construction projects, said "Not only will this bill provide funding for the Corps of Engineers to start restoration work at the North Jetty, but it also includes money and language directing the Corps to seek a more permanent solution to our flooding and erosion problem at Ocean Shores."
The appropriations bill is also the legislative vehicle that funds the ongoing Grays Harbor Navigation project, and a total of $13 million was included for dredging and related work on the deepening and widening project was also included in the bill, according to the congressmen.
