HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE APPROVES $120 MILLION IN WASH. STATE MILITARY CONSTRUCTION FUNDING
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A House subcommittee today approved a total of $120 million for military construction expenditures in Washington State, U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks said Monday.
The total includes $15.6 million for dredging at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard to provide safe clearances for carrier operations, and $11.2 million for facilities at McChord AFB required for the new C-17 cargo aircraft, which will begin arriving at the base next month, said Rep. Dicks, a member of the House Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittee.
The Military Construction Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2000 also includes an accelerated appropriation of $6.7 million for the replacement of a debilitated pier at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport. The pier is used for range craft operations, float planes and other water craft performing missions for the station, and its replacement was originally scheduled for the next fiscal year. After consultation with Keyport officials this Spring, Rep. Dicks urged the subcommittee to fund the project in this year due to serious questions about the condition of the decaying pier structure.
The bill also funds another increment of construction work at Sub Base Bangor associated with the D-5 upgrade program. Trident submarines based at Bangor will ultimately be equipped with the newer D-5 Trident II missiles, which require new facilities to be built at Bangor and which involves substantial retrofit work at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton in future years, Rep. Dicks said.
Addressing a high priority for the Army as well as for all the services, the bill adds $9 million for construction of family housing at Fort Lewis, replacing a tract of homes originally built in the 1940s.
