Defense Budget Contains Another $581 Million for Construction at Washington State Military Facilities
The budget submitted to Congress by the Obama Administration today contains a total of $580,933,000 for military construction projects at Washington State military facilities, according to U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks.
The budget includes the second increment of funding for the $715 million replacement of the 30-year old explosives handling wharf at Submarine Base Bangor. For construction work on the upgrade in the next fiscal year the Navy has requested $280 million, Rep. Dicks said.
Two other large items in the FY 2013 Military Construction budget proposal are $91 million for a wastewater treatment plant and $73 million for a Battalion Complex, both at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma.
“These substantial expenditures reflect the military value of our state’s defense bases which are strategically located and which house some of the most important elements of our nation’s military force,” said Rep. Dicks. He added that “the consistently-high amount of construction funding in the defense budget for Washington has also helped to boost local employment, particularly in the Puget Sound area. “
