Rep. Dicks Elected Chairman of House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee

U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks (D-Wash.) was officially named chairman of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee today, after serving for 31 years on the panel, including several terms as vice-chairman.

The 17-term congressman from Bremerton, Wash. is regarded as one of the most knowledgeable members of the House on national security issues.  In addition to his service on the defense funding panel he has also served on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, including four years as the top Democratic member of the committee.

The assignment means that Rep. Dicks will leave the chairmanship of the Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittee, but the congressman emphasized that he will remain an active member of the subcommittee because of its vital importance to Pacific Northwest environmental interests.
