Washington D.C. – On Thursday, September 13th 2012, House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Congressman Adam Smith will lead a discussion on U.S. detention policy for individuals captured under the Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) and protecting civil liberties while ensuring national security.

As Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, Smith has consistently advocated for a detention policy that respects the right enshrined in the U.S. Constitution and brings the full force of our judicial system to bear when prosecuting those who have attempted to attack the United States.  Earlier this year, in concert with Senator Mark Udall, Smith introduced legislation designed to ensure that any individual detained on U.S. soil under the Authorization of Military Force (AUMF) has access to due process and the federal court system. The bill would also prohibit military commissions and indefinite detention for individuals detained in the United States and would affirm that any trial proceedings “shall have all the due process as provided for under the U.S. Constitution.”
