REP. FUDGE CELEBRATES THE 47TH ANNIVERSARY OF MEDICARE AND MEDICAID BEING SIGNED INTO LAW

Rep. Fudge Celebrates the 47th Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid
Being Signed into Law

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Today, Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) marked the 47th anniversary of the enactment of Medicare and Medicaid.  One of the most important programs for America's elderly in the history of our nation, Medicare was signed into law July 30, 1965 by President Lyndon Johnson. The law also created the Medicaid program for certain people and families with low incomes and limited resources

“Today, we celebrate the tremendous success of Medicare and Medicaid in providing seniors and others with health care security.  In our district alone Medicare supports over 65,000 beneficiaries. I will continue to work to strengthen Medicare and continue access to Medicaid for families with limited resources, along with other government programs that are so important to our nation,” stated Congresswoman Fudge.

"Over the last 47 years, Democrats have fought vigorously to enact, protect, and strengthen Medicare and we will not end the fight.  The Affordable Care Act, enacted in 2010, extends Medicare’s solvency and improves its benefits as well as expands the availability of affordable health care through Medicaid. This is a huge contrast to what others in Congress have offered - a plan to shrink Medicaid and privatize Medicare into a voucher program that will cost seniors thousands of dollars more each year. I, along with my colleagues, will continue to work to ensure American citizens’ prosperity and health in the future."
