Congresswoman Edwards' Statement on Speaker Boehner's Debt Ceiling Bill Passing the House

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 29, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) released the following statement today on Speaker John Boehner’s (OH-8) debt ceiling plan, which passed the House 218-210. The bill would initially cut $917 billion in discretionary spending, which would lead to an increase in the debt ceiling by $900 billion, with $1.6 trillion in deficit reduction to be found later by a new “Joint Select Committee”.  The additional $1.6 trillion in cuts would result in severe cuts to Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid.

“Speaker Boehner’s dead-on-arrival budget cutting bill passed by House Republicans today is nothing short of reckless, potentially sending our economy on a downward spiral” said Congresswoman Edwards. “Rather than working constructively with Democrats and developing a real plan to increase the debt ceiling, House Republicans are continuing to put ideology ahead of what’s best for the country.  This bill puts at risk Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid – programs that millions of Americans depend on every day.  Furthermore, Speaker Boehner added a balanced budget amendment that would guarantee a default by requiring passage of the amendment before the second debt ceiling increase in six months; this change to secure a few more Tea Party votes is unacceptable and even more of a non-starter in the Senate.  Such partisanship and lack of willingness to compromise on the part of my Republican colleagues is irresponsible.  It is time for a clean debt ceiling increase that protects the creditworthiness of the United States so we can get to the business of creating jobs.”
