Iraq
While the sacrifices of American soldiers have created a safer Iraq, we must continue to work toward meeting political and economic objectives for this progress to continue. From my visits there to observe conditions on the ground and meet with Iraqi officials, I understand what an enormous challenge they face in moving from dictatorship to democracy. While Iraqi leaders move forward on important legislative priorities, we must continue to build friendships with those in the region who view terrorism as the common enemy. Trade, education, economic development and people-to-people contacts always prove to be the best foundation for friendships. This is not an easy process, but I am hopeful that a stable, democratic Iraq will be an important partner in a more peaceful Middle East.
