Strengthening Education in New Mexico

October 14, 2010
Photo

Traveling around New Mexico over the past few weeks, I've been inspired by educators who are pushing the envelope to help the young people in our state.

Improving our education system is key to keeping America strong. From early education, to our public schools, to community colleges and universities, we must help students gain the knowledge they need to succeed in a global economy.

And our state is filled with examples of how to improve education here and around the country. Click the links below to see photo slideshows from my stops at great programs across New Mexico:

Mesalands Community College in Tucumcari is training the next generation of wind energy specialists, helping to make New Mexico a leader in homegrown, clean energy production.

UNM West and CNM in Rio Rancho are using state-of-the-art equipment to train medical professionals like nurses.

In Santa Rosa, I met with school administrators, law enforcement and local officials to brainstorm ways to keep drugs like Meth out of our schools.

The LANL Foundation is supporting education from birth through graduation and promoting math and sciences in New Mexico’s schools.

In addition to its vast cultural resources, the National Hispanic Cultural Center hosts a variety of courses, including Spanish language classes.

ENLACE helps Latinos enter and complete college, and reach their full potential.

Education must be a top priority, particularly when the economy is struggling. That's why I've fought to keep our teachers in the classroom and prevent lay-offs that would have been devastating for our communities.
