A Space that Art Should Fill
As arts programs fade from school schedules across the nation, students are missing out on valuable opportunities to nurture their talent and expand their minds. In New Mexico, non-profit organizations have been stepping up to the plate to fill this important role. I had a chance to see kids hard at work at the Fine Arts for Children and Teens (FACT) at the ARTbarn Community Studio in Santa Fe. The program is keeping New Mexico kids off the streets and making masterpieces.
When Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act last year, it included important provisions to assist educational programs. In order to develop a stronger economy, we need New Mexico's students to reach their full potential. FACT received a $25,000 Recovery grant which has helped its doors stay open to serve low income, at-risk, and traditionally underserved youth in the community with access to the visual arts.
