As a physician who cared for thousands of uninsured patients and families in Louisiana, I believe Congress must do more to expand access to affordable health-insurance coverage.  More importantly, we must address skyrocketing health costs.  Otherwise, more people will lose their coverage and find it harder to get needed care quickly in a government-run plan.

Some experts want to reduce costs by handing personal medical decisions to Washington bureaucrats.  Instead, we should empower individuals to limit costs by allowing more and better choices among competing private health-insurance plans.

Americans deserve more freedom to save tax free for future medical needs and to identify and choose health providers who will give them the best value.  Doctors and hospitals need better information and incentives to improve treatment outcomes, limit waste, reduce waiting times and improve patient satisfaction.  Too often, government-run plans get a failing grade in this area.

Unfortunately, President Obama’s new health-care law increases health costs, according to the Congressional Budget Office.  It pushes millions of patients into government-run Medicaid, where patients struggle to find a doctor.  It also imposes more than a half-trillion dollars in job-killing taxes on our economy, and raids Medicare to fund other programs.

As a Member of the House Ways and Means Committee, I will continue working to protect the doctor-patient relationship by repealing and replacing the 2010 health law with commonsense, affordable solutions.
