Honoring Our Fallen Heroes

Never leave a soldier behind. This is the sacred bond our service men and women form with each other on the front lines. It’s the same bond we must realize when they return to the home front.

This Memorial Day, Americans across our country will come together to recognize their courage, commitment and sacrifice. To our outstanding men and women in uniform and our military families I say, you have performed brilliantly and sacrificed greatly.

We have seen the best of a generation fight valiantly on the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq. Their courage and sacrifice along with that of their families has been quietly heroic. Many served multiple deployments and thousands have been killed in action or injured, both physically and emotionally.

For some families, their mothers or fathers, sisters or brothers are just returning home. For others, there is an emptiness that can never be filled. To those returning from the front lines, and those families suffering from loss, we must ensure that promises made are promises kept.

Earlier this month, I was proud to support the launch of the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program, a joint initiative through the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Labor. After serving on the frontlines our veterans should not have to stand in line for a job. This program will help our veterans get the educational benefits they have earned to help them find a job or get a better job than they had in the past.

For our military families who have suffered the ultimate loss, we must provide them the resources they need to help cope with the aftermath. That’s why I recently joined with Senator Rob Blumenthal (D-Conn.) to introduce legislation to extend the time military survivors have to make smart financial decisions concerning military death gratuity and benefits. We owe it to our military families faced with unexpected moves, new jobs and new schools time to plan for their financial future.

Our troops have honored our country by volunteering to serve. I have worked to honor their sacrifice by continuing to fight to bring them home. As they return home, we must stay firm in our commitment to them by making sure they have access to the services and support they and their families have earned and deserve. As a member of the Senate Military Family Caucus and the Senate Veterans Job Caucus, I will never stop fighting for the men and women in uniform who have served our nation.

We will never leave a soldier behind, that is our sacred trust and our promise for their sacrifice.

Thank you for serving our country. May God bless you, and may God continue to bless the United States of America.
