Myrick Votes To End Public Financing of Presidential Campaigns - Bill also ends the Election Assistance Commission

(Washington, DC)–US Representative Sue Myrick (NC-09) voted today to save millions in taxpayer dollars by ending public financing of presidential campaigns.

HR 3463 would terminate the Presidential Election Campaign Fund, the Presidential Primary Matching Payment Act, and the Election Assistance Commission, saving taxpayers $480 million and returning $199 million back to the Treasury.

“The federal government shouldn’t be in the business of spending taxpayer dollars on elections,” Rep. Myrick said. “By and large, taxpayers have rejected the idea of public funding for presidential campaigns, as have candidates, and the Election Assistance Commission was supposed to end back in 2005. We’re supposed to be cutting government spending, not continuing to spend millions of dollars on programs that serve no purpose”.

HR 3463, introduced by Rep. Gregg Harper (MS-03), passed in the House by a vote of 235-190.
