Washington, D.C.— Today, following a memorial service at Fort Hood, Texas, for the 13 people killed in last week’s tragic shooting, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) renewed his commitment to carefully follow the progress of ongoing investigations by the Army and FBI and stressed the importance of proceeding in a cautious and deliberate fashion.  The House Armed Services Committee has direct oversight of the Department of Defense and military services.

“What happened last week was not just a tragedy for our soldiers and their families at Fort Hood, but for our soldiers and military families around the world,” said Chairman Skelton. “It is important that we get to the bottom of this incident, but we must be careful to proceed in a deliberate, studied manner that will not interfere with the ongoing criminal investigation by the FBI and the Army’s criminal investigative service.  As a former prosecuting attorney, I want to make sure that our actions do not jeopardize the investigation or future prosecution of this case. We are closely monitoring the progress of the current joint investigation to ensure that it is thorough, and we will follow through as a committee when we have all of the facts.  Right now, we need to avoid jumping to any conclusions and give the Army and the FBI a chance to do their jobs.”
