Coffman Lauds Committee Approval of Balanced Budget Amendment

(WASHINGTON) — Today, U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO), chairman of the Congressional Balanced Budget Amendment Caucus, released the following statement after the House Judiciary Committee approved H.J. Res. 1, a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution.  The proposal passed the Committee today by a vote of 20-12.

“I will continue my efforts as chairman of the Balanced Budget Amendment Caucus to push for measures that hold Congress’ feet to the fire with a constitutional amendment requiring that they, like every family and nearly every state in the country, balance their budget,” Coffman said.

“Amending the Constitution is a long, arduous task and I applaud Rep. Bob Goodlatte, a member of the Balanced Budget Amendment Caucus, for getting this much-needed proposal out of Committee and on to the House floor for a vote.  Our $14.4 trillion national debt is pushing our country off a financial cliff and it’s extremely encouraging to hear that more and more of my colleagues in the House recognize the very serious threat of Washington’s reckless, out-of-control spending.”

The Balanced Budget Amendment Caucus is a bipartisan group of Members of Congress founded last year to raise awareness about the necessity and importance of amending the Constitution to require a balanced budget, and to educate other Members on this subject.  Caucus membership grew this year to over 60 members.
