DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION INCLUDES CARTER PROPOSAL

Bill Signed by President Allows Central Texas College, Fort Hood to Expand

Washington, Jan 10, 2006 -

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006, which was recently signed into law by President Bush, includes a request by Congressman John Carter for a land conveyance agreement between Central Texas College (CTC) and Fort Hood. This agreement will allow for a land exchange that will allow both facilities to expand.

The Defense Authorization Act also authorizes $441.54 billion in budget authority for a number of valuable defense and national security programs.  The law includes a pay increase of 3.1 percent for all service men and women; increases enlistment and reenlistment bonuses for active duty and reservists; enhances TRICARE benefits; expands survivor benefits; among other provisions that support our troops and their families.

“It is critical that we continue to support our service men and women at home and abroad. By authorizing this funding, our armed forces will receive the benefits, protection, and resources they need and deserve,” Congressman Carter said.  “Further, I am pleased that this law includes my request for the mutual benefit of Central Texas College and Fort Hood.”

This authorization will convey 40 acres to CTC to allow for the school’s continued growth in exchange for approximately 158 acres on the Northern boundary of Fort Hood. The added acreage will further enhance Fort Hood’s training capability.
