Lamborn Pushes to Open Offshore Energy Resources

Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05) today voted to replace President Obama’s restrictive energy plan on America’s outer continental shelf with a more robust plan to access American energy supplies.

President Obama’s No-New-Drilling, No-New-Jobs plan closes 85 percent of our offshore areas to energy production and opens no new areas for drilling. It effectively re-imposes the drilling moratoria lifted in 2008 in response to skyrocketing gasoline prices.

“The Obama Administration is trying to convince the American people that it wants to access domestic energy when its actions accomplish the exact opposite. House Republicans have replaced President Obama’s no-energy, no-jobs plan with a common sense plan to access American energy and create high paying jobs.”– Doug Lamborn (CO-05)

A report by the independent Congressional Research Service confirms that the 15 lease sales in President Obama’s plan represents the lowest number of lease sales ever offered in a five-plan since the process began in 1980.

H.R. 6082, the Congressional replacement plan, will generate $600 million in revenues and create tens of thousands of American jobs.

Congressman Doug Lamborn speaks in support of H.R. 6082, a bill to increase access to offshore domestic energy.

Specifically, H.R. 6082 would:

  • Implement a new lease schedule for 29 lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico, Mid-Atlantic, Southern Pacific, and the Arctic.
  • Provide for opening offshore Virginia to drilling, with the first of several lease sales starting in 2013. President Obama cancelled a lease sale off Virginia scheduled for 2011, and the President’s plan doesn’t allow energy production off Virginia until 2017 or later.
  • Protect national defense and military operations.
  • Provide for separate environmental reviews for each specific lease sale.
