Rep. McCarthy Announces Opening of Disaster Recovery Center in Nassau County

Congresswoman Called on FEMA to Open a Centrally Located Center to Assist Individuals, Households, and Businesses that Suffered Damage during Hurricane Irene

GARDEN CITY, NY – Today, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (NY-04) announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be opening a disaster recovery center in Nassau County on Saturday, September 10, in order to assist constituents who want to apply for funding to address damage to their homes and businesses as a result of Hurricane Irene.

Last week, the Congresswoman sent a letter to FEMA advocating for a center to open in Nassau County so that her constituents would have access to information about disaster assistance and to have questions answered about other hurricane-related assistance.

The Nassau County Disaster Recovery Center will be located at the Sports Complex Mitchell Field, Airport 1 Charles Lindberg Blvd., Uniondale, NY 11553.

The centers are staffed with disaster-recovery specialists who can provide information and answer questions about hurricane-related disaster assistance.  Operating hours will be 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. seven days a week until further notice.

FEMA strongly recommends that those seeking assistance register before visiting a recovery center.  Registration can be done by phone by calling the FEMA registration line at 800-621-3362.  Individuals with speech or hearing disabilities can call 800-462-7585.  In addition, applicants may register online at http://www.disasterassistance.gov/or with any web-enabled mobile device or smartphone at m.fema.gov.
