Coverage of Speaker Boehner’s Challenge to President Obama: Where are the Spending Cuts?

President Obama’s fiscal cliff plan has more new spending than spending cuts … and it can’t pass the House or the Democratic-controlled Senate. Speaker John Boehner called on President Obama today to outline the cuts he’s willing to make, noting that “the longer the White House slow-walks this process, the closer our economy gets to the fiscal cliff.” Here’s some of the coverage of the Speaker’s remarks:

  • John Boehner: Where are Obama’s cuts? (Politico): “‘But we’re still waiting for the White House to identify what spending cuts the president is willing to make as part of the ‘balanced approach’ he promised the American people,’ Boehner said.”
  • Boehner: Obama should outline spending cuts (USA Today): “…he chided the White House for delaying progress on ways to avoid the ‘fiscal cliff.’”
  • Boehner: Obama ‘Slow-Walking’ to ‘Fiscal Cliff’ (ABC News): “House Speaker John Boehner told fellow lawmakers that the White House has not been serious with proposals for spending cuts and accused President Obama of trying to “slow-walk” the process.”
  • GOP's Boehner says Obama slow-walking cliff talks (Associated Press): “Economists say the [fiscal cliff] could send the economy into recession. ‘The longer the White House slow-walks this process the closer our economy gets to the fiscal cliff,’ said Boehner.”
  • Boehner: 'We're Still Waiting' for the President, Democrats to Propose Cuts (National Journal): “Boehner said on the House floor that the plan Republicans have offered is consistent with Obama’s call for a ‘balanced approach’ that includes cutting spending.”
  • Boehner: ‘Where are the president’s spending cuts?’ (Daily Caller): “Obama has called for a balanced deal to pay down the debt that includes both new revenue and spending cuts. But Boehner suggested Tuesday that Obama is only serious about tax increases for the wealthy and isn’t talking enough about spending cuts.”
  • Boehner pushes Obama for cuts related to 'fiscal cliff' (Los Angeles Times): “Boehner has said his party would be willing to consider new tax revenue through an overhaul of the tax code, but in exchange Republicans want steep cuts…”
  • Boehner calls on Obama to ‘get serious’ about spending cuts (The Hill): “Republicans have pushed to steer the conversation toward spending cuts.”
  • Boehner, McConnell call on Obama to detail proposed cuts in fiscal talks (Fox News): “The top two Republicans in Congress demanded Tuesday that President Obama explain exactly what spending he would cut as part of any deal to avert the looming fiscal crisis…”
  • Boehner, McConnell urge Obama to name spending cuts (CNN): “Boehner described his Sunday meeting with the president as ‘cordial’ but contended he's still ‘waiting’ for Obama to identify entitlement cuts to go along with his proposal to increase tax rates…”

“Washington has a spending problem,” said Speaker Boehner.  “Let’s be honest - we’re broke.  And the plan that we’ve offered is consistent with the president’s call for a ‘balanced approach.’” In fact, the GOP plan calls for significant spending cuts and tax reforms previously supported by the president, and would protect middle class families and small business owners struggling in this economy.
