The State of Maryland is rich in history, natural resources, and human diversity. Founded by Lord Calvert in 1634 as a religious refuge, it was one of the original 13 colonies. The bravery of Revolutionary War troops earned Maryland its unofficial nickname "The Old Line State," and as Francis Scott Key watched the British attack Baltimore's Fort McHenry in the War of 1812, he wrote our National Anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner".

Often called "America in Miniature," there's something for everyone in Maryland. From the peaks of the Appalachians to the shores of the Atlantic, the possibilities of activities are endless. Whether you're hitting the ski slopes in Western Maryland or catching a wave in Ocean City, Maryland has it all. If you're a seafood lover, the Chesapeake Bay—world renowned for the Maryland Blue Crab—gives people the opportunity to catch their crab and eat it too! While you're at it, don't forget to try Senator Mikulski's signature crab cake recipe! If you're more of a city person, Baltimore is famous for its harbor, sports teams, and ethnic communities. Or you can venture to Annapolis, our state capital, which is rich in history and home to the esteemed United States Naval Academy.

Several federal agencies and military installations also reside in Maryland. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Security Agency (NSA), Social Security Administration (SSA), Ft. Meade, Ft. Detrick, Andrew's Air Force Base, Aberdeen Proving Ground, and Patuxent River Naval Air Station are all located here.

Maryland residents are just as diverse as the state in which they live. Farmers, fishermen, laborers, businessmen, and professionals all call Maryland home. The combination of metropolitan resources and hometown values makes Maryland a wonderful place to visit and to live.
