President Signs Cost-Saving Electronic Waste Reporting Legislation into Law

WASHINGTON, DC – House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) today released the following statement after President Barack Obama signed S. 710, the Hazardous Waste Electronic Manifest Establishment Act, into law. This new law will modernize the way the federal government and states track the shipment of hazardous waste by replacing the current paper-based tracking system with an electronic system. This transition to an electronic tracking system will help reduce paper work, streamline processes, and could help save over $100 million annually.

“This was a bipartisan, bicameral effort that will help eliminate government waste, reduce red tape, and save tens of millions of dollars each year,” said Upton. “By simply modernizing how we collect and maintain this data, we will eliminate millions of paper copies and reduce expenses and labor. This law will also improve access to public safety and security information for first responders and state regulators, helping to better protect our families and communities.”
