Congressional Internships

Issues: Education

Congressional internships provide a firsthand experience to gain insight on the inner workings of Congress, government agencies, and the legislative process.  Immediately, all interns are immersed in a fast paced, demanding work environment and expected to play a vital role in my office.

This is ideal for candidates who are interested in learning about the legislative process, have a firm commitment to public service, and are passionate about social and economic justice.   Responsibilities of Congressional interns in my office begin with, but are not limited to administrative work supporting congressional staff.  This includes answering phone calls, relaying crucial messages to staff in a timely manner, assisting in event planning, legislative research, drafting memo’s and press releases, sorting mail, acting as a Capitol tour guide, and serving as the first point of contact for all office visitors.

Given these responsibilities, it is crucial that candidates are professional, detail-oriented, dependable, and highly motivated.  Ideal candidates should also possess an ability to prioritize multiple tasks under tight deadlines, work well with others, and above all, are dedicated to serve everyone in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District.

I accept undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates. Though internships in my offices are unpaid, interns can receive college credit and are treated as full participants and given the space to grow both personally and professionally.
