Boustany Votes to Protect Human Life

Washington, DC – U.S. Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., MD (R-Southwest Louisiana), a cardiothoracic surgeon with 20 years of experience, voted today to end taxpayer subsidies on abortions. Boustany, who has a long record of protecting life and fighting for pro-life legislation, joined his colleagues in passing the measure through the House of Representatives.

“Today’s victory is a victory for human life in this nation,” Boustany said. “We must unequivocally end the slaughter of our most innocent victims. This legislation is of the utmost importance for the unborn children in this country.

“As a physician, I dedicated my life to healing and nurturing human life. As a Member of Congress, I will continue to ensure the right to life is protected, as I have done every day since taking office.”

The bill, H.R. 3, the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” bans taxpayer subsidies for abortion and abortion coverage. It prohibits subsidies in the form of refundable advanceable tax credits for abortion coverage. The bill addresses government funding of abortion made possible by President Obama’s health-care law and stops the current Internal Revenue Service practice of giving tax-preferred status to abortion.

In April, the legislation was approved by the House Ways and Means Committee, on which Boustany serves as the chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee.  The bill passed through that committee with Boustany’s support, with all Republican members voting in the affirmative.
