Boustany Supports Long-Term Flood Insurance Reform for Louisiana Residents

Washington, DC – U.S. Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., MD (R-Southwest Louisiana) voted for H.R. 1309, the Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2011, to assist Louisiana homeowners, businesses and communities.

“The legislation ensures a better system is in place to help residents in the future in dealing with hurricanes, flooding and natural disasters,” Boustany said. “This bill guarantees the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) will continue to provide additional assistance. Louisiana residents understand the need to prepare for flooding.”

In addition to providing a five year authorization to the NFIP, H.R. 1309 provides greater protections for homeowners who buy flood insurance through the program.  The current authorization of the NFIP is set to expire on September 30, 2011.  Since September 2008, the NFIP has been extended 11 times, and the program has lapsed three times during that same time period, creating needless uncertainty in the residential and commercial real estate sectors in communities across the country.

H.R. 1309 also addresses concerns about mapping issues, allowing for more input from state, local and industry experts in redrawing FEMA flood hazard maps. “Several local officials expressed their frustration about a lack of input on the new FEMA flood maps. The bill ensures their voices and expertise are heard and respected,” Boustany said.

The bill passed by a 406 - 22 vote.
