Boustany Continues to Defend Right to Life Despite Obamacare Rules

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr. M.D. (R-South Louisiana) released the following statement after an Obama Administration rule addressing contraception coverage took effect on August 1st. The rule requires most health insurance plans to include contraception among the preventive health services they must cover as part of Obamacare:

“I was deeply disappointed in President Obama's new so-called ‘contraception mandate,’ including his decision to coerce employers into providing coverage for medications that terminate human life.  The new mandate will require employers to offer coverage for emergency contraception drugs with no copayment, including ulipristal acetate. Like RU486, ulipristal acetate or Ella, is a selective progesterone receptor modulator. By blocking progesterone receptors, it can destroy a pregnancy and prevent implantation of a human embryo.

“In addition, I urge House and Senate leaders to pass the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act (H.R. 1179). I will continue playing an active role defending the right to life as this issue moves through the courts.”
