Boustany Commends Louisiana Exporters for Record First Quarter

Washington, DC – U.S. Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., MD (R-Southwest Louisiana) today lauded Louisiana exporters after a report from the World Trade Center of New Orleans showed a record quarter.  Exports from Louisiana manufacturers and farmers increased by 47.7 percent in the first quarter, according to the report.  The state also ranked as the 4th largest exporter among the fifty states, behind only Texas, California and New York.

“Louisiana is rapidly becoming a global trading leader and I will continue my efforts to ensure this trend continues,” Boustany said.“Today’s news is proof of our need to immediately implement the pending free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea to open new markets to manufacturers and farmers.”

According to the report, Louisiana’s largest export markets in the first quarter were China with $2.35 billion and Mexico with $1.28 billion. The report also notes a sharp increase in Louisiana’s exports of agricultural products and energy commodities.

In the first quarter of FY2011, the ports of New Orleans, Gramercy and Lake Charles led the nation in total volume.  These figures underscore the need for proper dredging and maintenance of the state’s waterways in order to allow vessels to pass safely through Louisiana waterways.  The Realize America’s Maritime Promise (RAMP) Act, introduced by Boustany, ensures funds collected in the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund are used for their intended purpose – proper maintenance of waterways across the country.

“With more than 90% of America’s export volume passing through Louisiana ports, it is crucial to the nation to ensure proper maintenance of our harbors and waterways,” Boustany said.  “Our port system is a national priority and affects every state, not just Louisiana.  Proper maintenance and dredging of our harbors and waterways is an essential component of expanding exports and creating more jobs in Louisiana.  As the U.S. gains global market share, it is critical to pass the RAMP Act which will help grow the economy and create good paying jobs.”

Boustany strongly believes trade is a key element for job growth and American competitiveness.  As a member of the Ways and Means Committee, he has repeatedly emphasized the importance of implementing the three free trade agreements, which open new markets for American goods and strengthen Louisiana’s economic position on the global stage.
