Boustany Announces $7.8 Million Grant for Rebuilding of Cameron Parish Schools

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Charles W. Boustany, Jr., (R-Southwest Louisiana), today announced a grant totaling over $7.8 million to assist with the rebuilding of schools in Cameron Parish after Hurricane Rita.  The grant, which was awarded to the state of Louisiana by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is for several buildings in the Cameron Parish School Board System.

“The students of Cameron Parish now, and for many years to come, will benefit from this FEMA grant and the many others received over the past 5 years, as well as those still to come,” said Stephanie Rodrigue, Superintendant of the Cameron Parish School Board.  “We remain grateful to our leaders in Washington and in Baton Rouge for keeping Cameron Parish Schools on the front burner, as our ongoing recovery continues. This grant will specifically provide cash flow to reimburse our account for the tremendous loss experienced in instructional equipment, textbooks, and instructional materials.”

“Rebuilding our schools in Cameron Parish is essential to the long-term recovery of the region after Hurricane Rita,” Boustany said. “Education will play a key role in preparing our next generation of leaders to guide the future of the parish and the state.  I am very pleased that these funds have been allocated and will continue to work toward a full recovery in Cameron Parish.”

Boustany has spearheaded recovery efforts along the Louisiana coast in the wake of several recent hurricanes.  He has also played a key role in rebuilding coastal wetlands and strengthening the coastline in order to protect Southwest Louisiana’s citizens and resources.
