KINGSTON STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF TOM MURPHY

Washington, Dec 18, 2007 -

Today, Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA/01) issued the following statement after learning of the passing of former House Speaker Tom Murphy:

“I was 29 years old when I was elected to the State legislature.  Out of 180 Members, 26 were Republicans. We were numerically insignificant yet the atmosphere was partisan and Speaker Murphy ruled.  He wasn’t just a powerbroker, but the Alpha and the Omega of the House.

He was intimidating not just to young Republicans like me but even Old Bull Democratic chairmen yielded to his authority.  In time, however, I learned if you respectfully disagreed with him and had a thoughtful argument, he not only tolerated discussion but he would work with you.

On one side of his personality he could be a crusty old battle axe insisting on winning every debate but on the other side he was a teary eyed sentimental advocate for children, education and the downtrodden.

I grew to respect, admire and love the man.  Last summer, I visited him at his home.  We had a nice visit and although he wasn’t able to speak he followed and enjoyed my report on the latest political gossip.  What a tragedy it was that a man who made governors, judges and political careers, brought Georgia into modern times and hand stamped decades of change and projects, was now a captive of his own body unable to engage in the many matters he so loved.

I’ve prayed for him ever since.  I knew him as a godly man and know he’s in good hands.  We should all be thankful for his leadership and contribution to a great Georgia.”
