Des Moines, Nov 11 -

By Iowa Congressman Tom Latham

In the first Veterans Day Proclamation, President Eisenhower stated, “In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans' organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose.” It is in this tradition that the whole nation recognizes the selflessness and dedication of our veterans each year.

Iowa is home to hundreds of thousands of veterans. Today marks the most visible day of the year for the recognition and respect these men and women earn every day. We owe each of these patriots our unending appreciation.

Our veterans have provided us with a powerful model of character, discipline and patriotism, even as they often regard their own military service with modesty and humility. Though they have performed their duty with quiet dignity, they cannot camouflage how their service has protected liberty and changed the world.

The freedom we enjoy today is a direct result of their service and sacrifice.

It is my highest duty and privilege to represent Iowa veterans in the United States Congress, and I will continue doing all that I can to deliver on the benefits that they were promised. Again I thank them for their sacrifice, which has safeguarded our nation and the principles that make ours the greatest country in the world.
