Boswell Briefing: Celebrate Women's History Month

Dear Fellow Iowan,

This month is Women’s History Month, a time in which we recognize women leaders and honor their many contributions.

As a husband and father of strong, successful women I’m especially proud to mark this important month.

Make no mistake about it. Women have changed the course of our history:

From Betsy Ross, who sewed the symbol of our revolution into the first American Flag – a symbol of independence and self-governance that still holds true today to Ann Dunwoody, the first and only female to serve as a four-star General in United States Military.

From Harriet Beecher Stowe, who’s first novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a literary force in the abolitionist movement to end slavery to Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman elected to Congress.

From Abigail Adams, the 2nd First Lady of the United States was better known as “Mrs. President” for her unshakable efforts to put our nation on the right path to Sandra Day O’Connor, the first female member of the United States Supreme Court and Nancy Pelosi the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives.

And someday soon, I have a feeling another fearless and tireless pioneer will be elected the first female President of the United States.

From gaining the right to vote to reaching higher educational attainment levels, to breaking glass ceilings in corporate America, women in our country have and continue to ignore the naysayers and overcome every obstacle in front of them.

Women continue to soar as successful entrepreneurs. Nearly 8 million businesses in the country are owned by women. In our home state of Iowa, one out of four businesses are owned by women.

There’s no doubt that women still face many challenges. But thanks to all of those women who have come before us and those who fight on today, we were able to make the United States the great nation it is today. And millions of women will continue to make history and change the lives of all Americans.

To all our women leaders, I say THANK YOU.

Sincerely,

Leonard L. Boswell
Member of Congress
