Lamborn Welcomes Secretary Finley to Colorado Springs

Lamborn and Secretary Finley Concluded Tour of Military Installations Focused on the Defense and Economic Environment of the Fifth District

Rep. Lamborn (CO-5) hosted Dr. James I. Finley, the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Technology on a two day tour of the Fifth Congressional District.  The visit, which included stops at Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station and Schriever Air Force Base, as well as a breakfast with the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce,  culminated in a tour of UCCS, where Congressman Lamborn and Secretary Finley focused on the University's National Institute of Science, Space, and Security Centers (NISSC) and other research initiatives.

"The Pikes Peak Region has a proud military tradition; this visit from Secretary Finley has highlighted the Fifth Congressional District's vital role in ensuring our nation's security and our military's ability to complete its missions around the world.   Industries based on technological innovations are growing rapidly in this area, as evidenced by the incredible growth of UCCS, particularly its science and engineering programs.   The programs offered at UCCS are fulfilling the need for highly qualified, well trained graduates within these industries and the military.  Working in tandem, these various sectors ensure that our region will continue to experience positive growth."—Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-5)

This morning Congressman Lamborn introduced Secretary Finley at the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce Breakfast.  Finley's statements focused on the issues facing small business defense contractors.

"This was an impressive visit.  As evidenced by Congressman Lamborn's recent placement on the House Armed Services Committee, it is apparent that he is a leader with a vision.  The Congressman understands what needs to be done and has taken the initiative, bringing together industry, academia, and government at all levels.  Small business is the heart and soul of innovation and creativity in this country, and we see that firsthand in Colorado Springs.  The contribution of small business to our national security cannot be overstated.  Small business contracts with the Department of Defense have increased substantially since 2000, and there is still more room to grow.  The wealth of opportunity in Colorado Springs has created a vibrant and strong economy and an environment in which small business can truly thrive."— James I. Finley, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Technology
