    I am profoundly saddened by the news of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. My prayers go out to the families of those who have lost loved ones, and those trying to make sense of this horrible tragedy.

    It is easy to detach ourselves from such tragedies when they feel so far away, but the sad truth is that this could have very easily been my community or yours. So I urge each of you to take time throughout the course of this day, and as details continue to be revealed, to pray for peace – peace for the Sandy Hook Elementary School family and for one another.

    I was proud to join with my colleagues this morning in standing up for the Medicaid program. For nearly 50 years, Medicaid has been part of our promise to provide for our most vulnerable and now is no time to turn our back on this commitmen...t.

    The elderly, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and families with dependent children have all benefited from the access to health care that Medicaid provides. Reducing our support for Medicaid would have one of two unacceptable results: it could reduce benefits or it could impose new limits on program eligibility. We cannot allow this to happen.

    In the Congress, I will continue to fight to protect Medicaid in discussions surrounding the fiscal cliff. We are committed to this program, the benefits it provides, and the people who benefit from it.    See More

    Washington, DC (Dec. 5, 2012) - Today, the House Democratic Caucus reelected Rep. Elijah E. Cummings to serve as Ranking Member of the House Oversight and Government Refor...m Committee in the 113th Congress.

    "I am honored to continue serving as Ranking Member and look forward to working with Committee Members on issues that go to the very heart of the lives of the American people," said Cummings.
