CONGRESSMAN RENACCI SUPPORTS BILL TO LIMIT MILITARY ENGAGEMENT IN LIBYA

Washington, DC—Today, Congressman Jim Renacci (OH-16) announced that he will vote in support of H.R. 2278, a resolution to limit the use of United States Armed Forces in Libya.

The resolution prohibits funding for U.S. military operations in Libya, with the exception of search and rescue, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and aerial refueling operations. Since U.S. involvement in Libya began in March, Congressman Renacci has made clear his concerns regarding President Obama’s failure to consult with Congress about the conflict and failure to clearly explain the objective and scope of the mission to Congress and to the American people.

“On June 3, I supported a resolution giving the White House 14 days to make a clear and compelling case to Congress justifying the presence of U.S. armed forces in Libya,” Congressman Renacci said. “Unfortunately, the President has chosen to ignore the demands of Congress and the requirements of the War Powers Act.  He has put our armed forces in harm’s way while spending more than $715 million on a mission the he has neither explained nor justified.  While today’s resolution does not go as far as I would like, it takes a clear step in the right direction by reining in the President’s otherwise unfettered and unchecked deployment of military resources and taxpayer funds to an operation in Libya that has no clearly defined scope or purpose.”
