“So, in terms of spending cuts, we’re on the record having voted for about $1.6 trillion. In terms of entitlement reform, over a trillion dollars already, and more savings to be gained in further discussions on the subject. A strong down payment. What is missing are two elements that the President has put forth in his budget: growth, investments in infrastructure. Yes, the President has called for investments in infrastructure – to build the infrastructure of America and to create jobs, to grow our economy. And where are the revenues? Where are the revenues? Regardless of the cuts, or the changes in entitlements, more demanded in terms of what seniors would have to pay into Medicare and at what age that would happen, while the Republicans refuse to touch one hair on the head of the wealthiest people in our country..."

“The same holds true in Michigan. Too many families continue to face daunting economic challenges. This is no time to engage in a debilitating assault on the hard-working men and women who educate our children, build our roads, keep our neighborhoods safe, and preserve the health of our communities."

“From the start, Republicans have known that DOMA is unconstitutional, and that’s why Republicans have tried to pass legislation to prohibit judicial review of this disgraceful law. Speaker Boehner’s legal team repeatedly failed to convince the courts to keep denying basic rights to American families, all while wasting nearly $1.5 million in taxpayer funds. Now, the Supreme Court will decide whether Edie Windsor deserved to face a penalty of hundreds of thousands of dollars after her partner of four decades passed away. We believe Ms. Windsor and couples like hers will see justice done in this case."

“Chen Kegui was not allowed access to his own legal representation and he was prohibited from contact with his family during the trial, in clear violation on Chinese law. It is deeply disappointing that the Chinese government has not yet fulfilled its promise to Chen Guangcheng to conduct a full investigation into the illegal activities of local officials in the detention and harassment of the Chen family."

"We can make a difference right now by bringing the middle income tax cut up for a vote to give, once again, 100 percent of Americans a tax relief. The Senate has already passed the bill, the President is poised with his pen to sign it, Democrats are unified on it. We have a discharge petition to bring it to the floor. The only obstacle standing in the way of middle income tax relief are the Republicans’ unwillingness to ask the top two percent to pay their fair share. This top two percent which, by the way, gets a tax cut – it continues a tax cut in the middle income tax extension. This is a moment of truth. The clock is ticking, Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat. But in many homes across America it’s a very, very lean time..."

“House Republicans can do their part now by joining Democrats to extend the middle class tax cuts without further delay. With Republicans refusing to take up the Senate-passed tax relief bill, House Democrats have filed a discharge petition to force a vote on this legislation, so we can put money into the pockets of consumers during the holiday season and the new year. There is no time to waste."

"It really is something that has to be seen in really a more comprehensive way, and not just one thing, not just one thing about raising the age of Medicare. First of all, show me the money. I don't even know why that is something that people think is going to produce money. What are we going to do with people between 65 and 67? Why is that – where is the money? Show me the money there. But it's not even the right thing to do, first and foremost. But is it a trophy that the Republicans want? Is that the trophy that they want in order to do what is right, to raise – to raise the rates for the wealthiest people in our country?"

"Consider if the Republicans agree to bringing up the middle income tax cut, which I hope they will, that will be a victory for the American people and that’s why we are here. I would hope that would break the fall on the cliff, which is becoming more of a slope if they do that. But really, we really do need to put a down payment, not just in revenues, which passing the middle income tax cut means the end of holding them hostage for tax cuts for the rich...

“Jack Brooks never hesitated to vote his conscience and always upheld his oath to protect and defend the Constitution. He was one of the few southerners of his time to support civil rights. He held presidents responsible for their actions and held our federal government accountable for how it spent the public purse. Over his career, he chaired both the Government Operations Committee and the Judiciary Committee with energy and passion, leading the charge for anti-trust legislation, securing rights for disabled Americans, and fighting for consumers at every turn."
