Thompson Announces Staff Delegation to Investigate Terror Plot

January 15, 2010 (WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, announced a staff delegation to London, England and Amsterdam, the Netherlands to investigate the circumstances surrounding the December 25 attempted terror attack. The delegation will conduct a series of meetings and briefings with Embassy and Airport officials on intelligence, border security, and aviation security matters.

Chairman Thompson released the following statement announcing the trip:

“I have directed Committee on Homeland Security staff to get a first hand look at the security systems that failed on December 25. I am confident that this in-person examination will inform the Committee’s January 27th hearing on Flight 253 and provide insights on information sharing infrastructure, the watchlisting process, and passenger screen technologies.

While I am relieved that some reforms have already been put in place, the Committee needs to examine the role of each DHS components and the intelligence community in the December 25 attack.”
