Breakthrough For Farmers: Starting Today, Can Apply For Guest Worker Program Electronically

Representative Kathy Hochul (NY-26) said she was astounded to learn that one of the farmers in her Congressional District had mailed 18 pounds of paperwork to the Department of Labor (DOL) to apply for the same guest workers that had worked on her farm year after year. As a result, Hochul worked with the DOL to allow electronic filing and more timely responses to applicants.

Schumer, Gillibrand, Hochul Highlight Important Work Of NFARS National Guard Members During Sandy Response; Urge DOD To Consider Lifesaving Efforts In Future Base Decisions

Today, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and Representative Kathy Hochul urged the Department of Defense (DoD) to closely examine the importance of the National Guard 107th Airlift wing, based at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station (NFARS), to both Western New York, the state, and the entire Northeast. They emphasized in their letter to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta that the 107th Airlift Wing, which has served as a proven resource in the Western New York region, also serves as a unit of Northeast regional and national importance given their response to Tropical Storms Irene and Lee last year, and their recent service during Hurricane Sandy. Schumer, Gillibrand, and Hochul highlighted that DoD should take into account the contributions that the 75 members of the 107th Airlift Wing made in response to this historic disaster after they deployed from NFARS in any future restructuring decisions.

In Letter To Chairman King, Hochul Urges Immediate Hearing On Student Visa Program, Security Vulnerabilities

WILLIAMSVILLE N.Y. - Today, Representative Kathy Hochul (NY-26) sent a letter to the Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Peter T. King (NY-3) urging for a hearing to be held on security vulnerabilities in the nation’s student visa program. This request follows an attempted bombing on the Federal Reserve Bank in New York, in which the primary suspect entered the United States on a student visa. According to intelligence officials and the New York Police Department (NYPD), the suspect came to the United States with the intent to commit a terrorist act and exploited the student visa program to gain entry.

Funding For Government Contract Assistance Center Announced By Hochul

Today, Representative Kathy Hochul (NY-26) announced that nearly $300,000 in federal funding has been awarded to the World Trade Center Buffalo Niagara (WTCBN) to establish the Niagara Procurement Technical Assistance Center (Niagara PTAC) at Niagara University. In June, Rep. Hochul sent a letter to the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) in support of the WTCBN’s proposal.

In Letter To Board Of Veterans Appeals, Hochul Pushes For Immediate Hearing In Buffalo

Today, Representative Kathy Hochul (NY-26) sent a letter to the Board of Veterans Appeals (BVA) requesting that they schedule a travel board hearing in Buffalo immediately. This letter comes after reports that an audio recording device malfunctioned the last time the travel board visited Buffalo, preventing the BVA from completing transcripts of the proceedings. The BVA told those veterans in attendance that if they would like their case to be heard in person, they need to wait for the BVA travel board to return to the Buffalo region.

Today, on a tour of Jiffy-tite’s Lancaster facility, Representative Kathy Hochul (NY-26) and Senator Patrick Gallivan announced their support for Jiffy-tite’s application to the ReCharge NY and the Excelsior Jobs Programs to expand their facilities. Prior to the tour, Hochul and Gallivan met with Mike Rayhill, Jiffy-tite President, and company leadership to discuss efforts to strengthen American manufacturing and expand education and training opportunities to close the skills gap.
