Price Statement on State Department Decision to Waive Requirement, Provide Aid to Egypt

Washington, D.C.– House Republican Policy Committee Chairman Tom Price, M.D. (R-GA) issued the following statement after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reportedly decided to waive funding conditions for providing military aid to Egypt. The omnibus bill passed at the end of 2011 states that “the Secretary of State should consult with the Committees on Appropriations prior to obligating funds for such items to governments of countries undergoing democratic transition in the Middle East and North Africa.”

“The decision by the administration to waive this requirement and allow the State Department to provide $1.3 billion in assistance to Egypt is outrageous and violates the spirit of congressional action,” said Chairman Price.  “Recent events demonstrate that the situation in Egypt is volatile and their transition questionable, dictating more caution prior to any United States aid.  It is imperative that Egypt demonstrate that it is working toward pro-democracy goals and being a positive force in the world community.  Before this money is transferred, Secretary Clinton must have Congressional support and make clear to the American people how this decision is in the best interest of our national security.”
