 Federal Disaster Declaration Fact Sheet 

April 28, 2011  On April 28, 2011, President Obama issued a major disaster declaration for the State of Alabama, triggering the release of Federal funds to help individuals and communities recover from the Severe Storms, Tornadoes, Straight-line Winds, and Flooding, beginning April 15, 2011, and continuing.

Details of the disaster declaration and assistance programs are as follows:

Individual Assistance: Assistance to individuals and households.  Cullman, DeKalb, Franklin, Jefferson, Lawrence, Marshall, Tuscaloosa, and Walker Counties are elligible for Individual Assistance.

The Individual Assistance can include:

  • Individuals and Households Program (IHP) (housing assistance);
  • Disaster Unemployment Assistance;
  • Crisis Counseling (crisis counseling and other programs intended to address the needs of people);
  • Disaster Food Stamp Program;
  • American Bar Association Young Lawyers Legal Aid;
  • and Small Business Administration disaster loans

 

Public Assistance: Assistance for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities.     All 67 counties in the State of Alabama for debris removal and emergency protective measures, including direct Federal assistance, under the Public Assistance program.

Hazard Mitigation:   Assistance for actions taken to prevent or reduce long-term risk to life and property from natural hazards.  All counties in the State of Alabama are eligible to apply for assistance under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the State and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
