(WASHINGTON, DC) – US Representative Sue Myrick (NC-09) today voted against the Defense Authorization Conference Report.

The conference report authorizes FY 2010 appropriations for the Department of Defense. The House version of the Defense Authorization bill passed in June with Rep. Myrick’s support. However, during Conference Committee – where differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill are reconciled – the controversial and unrelated Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act was added to the bill.

“We shouldn’t use our troops as a political tool,” said Rep. Myrick. “This is what’s wrong with our government today, and yet another example of why people are so fed up with Congress”.

Similar legislation, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, passed in the House in April as a stand-alone bill. The Senate has not considered either bill on the floor this year.
