Myrick Votes Against Amnesty In DREAM Act

(Washington, DC)–US Representative Sue Myrick (NC-09) tonight voted against the DREAM Act, citing serious loopholes that will lead to amnesty for illegal immigrants.

“The DREAM Act is amnesty, plain and simple.  Once an illegal alien applies for citizenship under this bill, the government is prohibited from deporting him or her – no matter how fraudulent the claim – providing safe harbor and a pathway to amnesty for millions,” Myrick said.

The DREAM Act also makes criminal illegal aliens with misdemeanor charges eligible for citizenship. This includes criminal illegal aliens charged with DWI, gang activity, assault and battery, and certain drug offenses.

“Why should people who have broken our laws by coming here illegally – and who continue to break our laws once here – be rewarded with citizenship?  It’s a slap in the face to those who play by the rules and obey our laws.  It’s wrong”.

“Once given citizenship, illegal immigrants who have broken our laws will be able to compete with legal, hardworking Americans for jobs.  With 14.5% of Americans under the age of 35 currently looking for work – and nationwide unemployment numbers hovering at record highs – we cannot pass a bill that will take more jobs from people who deserve them,” Myrick said.

The DREAM Act passed in the House by a vote of 216 – 198.
