Myrick Statement on Passage of Payroll Tax Holiday Extension - Legislation Includes Much-needed Unemployment Insurance & Health Care Reforms

(Washington, DC)–US Representative Sue Myrick (NC-09) has released the following statement regarding the passage of the Conference Report on HR 3630 – The Temporary Payroll Tax Cut Continuation Act of 2011:

“Today, the House passed important legislation that prevents a tax increase on working Americans, ensures seniors on Medicare will have access to their doctors and reforms our unemployment insurance program so that it works better for American taxpayers.”

The legislation passed today will:

  • Extend the payroll tax holiday through December 31, 2012, allowing the average American worker $800 more each year in take-home pay
  • Allow states to drug test recipients of unemployment benefits
  • Create a national job-search standard and requires all unemployment benefit recipients to actively seek employment
  • Extend welfare benefits through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program and ensures that funds cannot be accessed at ATMs in strip clubs, liquor stores or casinos
  • Extend the “doc fix” through December 31, 2012, preventing a 27.4% cut in Medicare reimbursements to physicians, ensuring that seniors continue to have access to medical care
  • Cut provisions in the health care law by $20 billion
