Charlotte Area Joins Federal Program To Fight Drug Trafficking

(Charlotte, NC) – A year after Federal and local law enforcement officials announced their application, Mecklenburg, Gaston and Union Counties have been designated as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA).  They will be included as part of the Atlanta HIDTA.

“In a difficult budget environment, now more than ever it is important for Federal, State and local partners to collaborate in order to maximize resources,” said Gil Kerlikowske, Director of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), in a press release today.  “Designating these counties as HIDTAs will promote the kind of intergovernmental and interagency cooperation required to stem drug trafficking across the nation.”

“When I was mayor of Charlotte, we went after the drug dealers and drug traffickers in our area,” Rep. Myrick said.  “Unfortunately, the geography of our area still makes it a prime target for drug trafficking.  It’s no secret that drug money often ends up in the hands of terrorists, where it is used to finance violence against us, both here and abroad. I’m so grateful that our law enforcement officials will have additional resources to combat drug trafficking, and keep our citizens safe.”

The HIDTA program is administered by the ONDCP.  According to its website, the program “enhances and coordinates drug control efforts among local, State and Federal law enforcement agencies.  The program provides agencies with coordination, equipment, technology, and additional resources to combat drug trafficking and its harmful consequences in critical regions of the United States.”
